Chess Club for all IDEA families 1:30-2:30pm

Chess Club: Meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 1:30-2:30 at the IDEA office. For IDEA students of all ages and family members. This is not a drop off event except for kids in 9th grade or above. An adult must accompany students 8th grade of younger. Bring your chess board and be ready to have a fantastic time. Adults can play too! General Orientation 2-3:30pm @ IDEA

I encourage you to attend a General Orientation as soon as possible. I present the General Orientations. You will learn about ordering materials, filling out your Individual Learning Plan (ILP), Progress Reports (PR) and navigating the IDEA website. Plus a question and answer period. It is best if you attend without children however if you need to bring them I will have coloring and activity pages for them. They can sit quietly with you and enjoy doing some art work. Here are the dates and times for General Orientation. Please note that some of these are in the evening (no need to sign up – just come when you can) at the IDEA office:

If you have a high schooler then we highly encourage you to also attend a High School Orientation. It is more advantageous to attend a General Orientation prior to attending a High School Orientation. These are presented by IDEA Contact Teachers for High School. The content is totally different and pertains to high school and includes:  How to prep and apply for some scholarships, what types of courses and what “track” to follow depending on your goals:  college, trade school or work force entry. You will learn how you can earn high school credit for doing volunteer work (Service Learning) or by working a part time job (Work Study). You will also learn how you can take college courses in high school and earn both high school and college credit for them. No need to sign up for these. Just come as soon as you can and bring your high schoolers with you if possible. Dates for these are on the following Wednesdays from 1-3pm at the IDEA office:

PAC (Parent Advisory Committee):  First meeting will be Monday, Aug 13. The PAC meets the 2nd Monday of the month from 3-4:30pm @ IDEA. This is a wonderful time to get together with other IDEA parents to talk about homeschooling issues which are important to you, ask questions, help plan activities and events for your children, and meet some really awesome folks. Whether you have been homeschooling for years or are just brand new to IDEA we welcome you. IDEA parent Jen Schutte is PAC Chairwoman. ILPs DUE Sept 15

ILP (Individual Learning Plan) for each K-12th grade student in IDEA on Sept 15. Since this falls on a weekend this year turning them in on the Friday before or the Monday after is fine. PreK students are not required to have an ILP. Please see your contact teacher for details or refer to the listserv announcement or hard copy calendar posted on the IDEA website – login required. IDEA office can be reached at 374-2200. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm. You are also welcome to call Sandy at 456-1368.

Reading Workshop for parents of K-2 grades 11am-1pm

For parents and teachers of grades K-2 IDEA students

We will examine the components of a good language arts curriculum for K-2 students and explore the use if games and activities to teach reading. This workshop will cover materials for the parents an will also include reading activities that can be practiced with their students during the workshop.

Art Contest deadline

CALLING ALL STUDENT ARTISTS

For our CAREEN DAY on Oct 5 we are looking for artwork to represent each of these categories *Police Dept. *Firefighters *EMT *CPR *Self Defense *Police Dispatch *Gun Safety *Corrections Officer

Submitted artwork will be posted anonymously to the IDEA Families Facebook page for this contest. One artist from each category will be selected to draw their art on a window (week of Sept 24th) at the IDEA office for everyone to see on Career Day.

Fine Art Workshop Grades 4-8 from 2-4pm @ IDEA

Region F families are invited to attend our Fine Art Workshop!

Who:  Students in 4th – 8th grade and their parent or guardian

When:  Tuesday, September 25th from 2:00 – 4:00PM

Where:  IDEA Region F Office

 Details:  This workshop will be based on the historical significance of the Statue of Liberty.  There is a $5 fee per student that can be deducted from allotment provided History and/or Art is included on the ILP. Participants will be led by Dawn Cogan, Mary Ekblad, and Kathleen Kinney in creating a chalk pastel of the Statue of Liberty as shown below.

A Special Day Planned for Parents and their High Schoolers

So many opportunities are on the horizon for your high schooler as well as so many choices.  This can become overwhelming as you navigate your way to prepare for the future.  What does your high schooler want to do after high school?  The choices are endless!

Let’s work together to find out what you and your student can do now that will open as many doors as possible for their future.

This special day has been planned to guide you through the many tools available to chart your course and to navigate with purpose the opportunities your high schooler will have to choose from as they approach graduation.

The morning session will introduce you.  All workshops will be hands-on and active so come ready to learn, laugh and explore!

Topics covered:

AKCIS – Explore this tool for discovering career options, taking personality surveys, doing college searches, finding apprenticeships

HS Course of Study – What classes should I take?  What classes do I need to take?  Does it matter?? Join in on the conversation about adequately preparing through course selection for open doors of opportunity.

APS – What is it?  How do I qualify?  Is it important?  What if I don’t plan on going to college? Lean about this special scholarship open to all Alaska students and how it can benefit you no matter what your plans you may have  after graduation.

Checklists and Timelines – Review the checklists and Timelines for high school that best prepare a student for either a career path or a college path.  How do I plan now to meet all the requirements before I graduate in order to keep options open.
Testing – SAT/ACT/PSAT and Work Keys – What are these tests and why should I take one?  How do they compare?  Which one is the best for me? When should I take it? These questions will be answered and reviewed with a question and answer time.

Questions and Answers  Time – Bring your questions and let’s dig in and find the answers for you!
