Residency - Students must reside in the State of Alaska.
Parental involvement - To participate in our homeschool program, at least one parent/guardian must be in the home actively engaged in the education of the children.
Change notification - Notify us if there is any change in contact information (address, phone number, email) or any changes in your children's individual learning plans.
Check email and website regularly - Most of our communication takes place via e-mail and information that you should know is posted on our website in What’s New and on the monthly and yearly calendars.
Monthly communication with your Contact Teacher - In accordance with state regulations, your contact teacher must communicate with you on a monthly basis. This can be as simple as a short phone call, an exchange of e-mails, visiting when you drop by the office, or even bumping into you in the store! This is your opportunity to share with them any successes, progress, questions, requests for assistance in locating resources, or concerns that you may have in the education of your children. Your contact teacher is of course available to you more frequently, at any time that you would like some input, but you can expect communication at least once each month.
Participate in state-mandated testing - IDEA students are required to take part in state mandated district assessments for grades 3-12, just like all other public school students. We rent a facility and provide teachers to conduct the testing in each area that has a population of IDEA students. Tests include Exit Exams in October for students in grades 11-12 and in April for those in grades 10-12, Standards Based Assessments (SBA’s) in April for students in grades 3-9, and TerraNova tests for students in grades 5 and 7 in February.
Submit quarterly samples of work - State regulations require samples of work in all subjects four times a year. We provide an extensive list of sample suggestions to IDEA parents.
Individual Learning Plans (ILP) - An Individual Learning Plan must be created for each student This includes (for each subject) the primary materials that you plan to use, the general topics that you plan to cover, and how you plan to assess learning. We have a form to use for this, and your Contact Teacher or Field Rep can work on it with you if you need help.
Progress Reports - These are similar to report cards and are due in January and May.
Materials - Non-consumable materials and equipment purchased for your use by Galena City School District are the property of Galena City School District. Equipment must be purchased or returned when you withdraw. Non-consumable books and other materials that are still usable by other families would be expected to be returned to us at withdrawal or whenever you are done with them. However, as long as you are using these materials and are enrolled, they will not be recalled.
